Home organization bins: a practical buying guide

Group items by where and how often they are used before deciding on a container. Measuring the shelf, drawer, or floor space prevents a bin from becoming another obstacle.

Frequently used things need a simple opening and a visible place to return to. Less-used items can be stored higher or farther back if they remain safely reachable.

The CPSC says medications and household cleaners should be locked up and kept out of children’s reach. A general organizer is not a substitute for choosing a secure, appropriate storage location for those items.

Use labels only where they make returns easier, and avoid filling a container so completely that it cannot be handled safely. Revisit the setup as the contents or household needs change.
